Alexis Sullivan receives her scholarship from teacher Gabrielle Durand
Warragul campus student Alexis Sullivan has won a coveted ‘Education Sponsorship’ Award from Baw Baw Shire Council
The Foundation student received her scholarship early in December from Foundation Studies Teacher Gabrielle Durand as Baw Baw Shire were unable to send a representative due to COVID-19 restrictions.
“We were delighted to present Lexi with her scholarship on 3rd December, and in the absence of council representative, I had that wonderful honour,” Gabrielle said.
“The scholarship was presented to Lexi at the Foundation Students “end of year” gathering at Burke Street Park in Warragul in front of her fellow students and our Student Support team.”
Gabrielle submitted a scholarship application for Alexis highlighting her dedication and willingness to adapt to new learning modes.
“Alexis came to TAFE Gippsland in 2019 after struggling with some of the socialisation aspects of mainstream school, and in June 2020 she returned to Warragul campus to complete her Certificate I in General Education for Adults,” Gabrielle said
“Alexis has a very dedicated approach to her studies and in the current environment has demonstrated this by her willingness to adapt to the changes in delivery of courses from face to face to remote learning and zoom classes.”
Gabrielle said Alexis has always shown support to her classmates.
“She is well respected by her teachers, staff and classmates alike and has earned this respect by always showing consideration and respect to herself and fellow students,” Gabrielle said.
Earlier in 2020, Alexis received accolades for writing to the Queen as her contribution to a class ‘Kindness’ project.
“She was suitably excited to receive a response back congratulating her on her efforts,” Gabrielle said.
“These things don't come easy for Alexis as she overcomes a learning disability, but her resilience to keep going, continue her studies and make a positive impact is inspiring.”
