Warragul’s Koorie Unit was the beneficiary of a collaboration between TAFE Gippsland and Gippsland Employment Skills Training (GEST) in 2020.

An Introduction to Computers Course was developed with GEST trainer Scott Mitchell taking charge of the training program.

“Topics covered in the course were functions of a computer, safety online, touch typing skills, how to create a folder, how to use Word, creating and using email, and how to fill out online forms,” Scott said.

“Lela Harrison entered the course with very limited computer knowledge or skills and has now completed beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of touch-typing skills to receive three certificates, gaining the confidence to operate a laptop, its functions and do basic tasks online.”

Scott said the change in Lela was ‘outstanding’ and the program has given her the confidence to use her device at home.

“With the help of St Vinnies and GEST, Lela was donated a laptop of her own to be able to continue with the skills she has gained,” Scott said.

Fellow student, Jacey Moffart, completed the Be Connected program and also received a certificate.

“In this program Jacey learnt about MyGov, online shopping, video conferencing, how to do family history, buying and selling online, online banking and social media,” Scott said.

“Jacey also gained the confidence to be able to set up her own computer space at home with the knowledge that she has learnt, and has helped others in her community with some of their own computer issues.”
