TAFE Gippsland’s animal science educators had a pawsome day grooming their pooches recently, using brand new equipment acquired thanks to a successful Regional Specialist Training Fund (RSTF) grant.
Animal sciences teachers and their pooches test out the new pet grooming facility at Yallourn. L-R: Olivia Thursky, Sophie Hodge, Peta Cohen (grooming professional from Glamour Groom, Elysha West and Jade Cameron.
Putting the recently purchased grooming baths, dryers, clippers and tables to the test, the teachers, under the expert guidance of Peta Cohen from Glamour Groom, transformed their furry models into sweet-smelling stars in their new practical animal care facility at Yallourn campus.
Head of Department Lou Underhill said the day provided hands-on professional development, teaching staff how to incorporate these tools into their programs.
“The facility, which was brought up to scratch with the help of our amazing facilities team, boasts a grooming salon, surgical theatre, dental area, consultation room and retail space,” Lou said.
“This innovative setup offers students a real-world experience of working in veterinary clinics and pet shops, further enhanced by industry partnerships that helped stock the retail area.
“A special shout-out to Program Manager Rhiannon Damsma and the entire animal science team for their dedication in bringing this learning space to life. With expert educators and strong industry ties, the team is ready to welcome students into an exciting, hands-on learning journey.”
It’s safe to say the day was a howling success and the dogs certainly came out smelling like roses!
