The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence is a global campaign that runs annually from November 25 to December 10, aiming to raise awareness about the pervasive issue of gendered violence and working towards eliminating it. Gender-based violence is a violation of human rights that affects millions of people worldwide. It can take many forms, including physical, emotional, financial and sexual abuse.
At TAFE Gippsland, we believe that education is not just about academic learning—it’s about fostering an environment where all students feel safe, supported and empowered. As such, we acknowledge the critical importance of addressing gendered violence and providing help and resources to students who may be experiencing or have experienced such violence.
Supporting students affected by gendered violence
We understand that experiencing gendered violence can have profound impacts on a person’s wellbeing, mental health and academic performance. If you're a student facing this challenge, we are here to help in a variety of ways:
1. Confidential support services
At TAFE Gippsland, we offer access to confidential support services. Whether you need someone to talk to or require assistance in navigating external resources, our staff are trained to provide a safe, understanding space. We can connect you with counsellors, mental health services and crisis support as part of our commitment to your wellbeing.
2. Access to external support networks
We collaborate with local community organisations, domestic violence helplines, and legal aid services to ensure that students have access to comprehensive support. Whether you need legal advice, safe accommodation, or a support worker, we can help direct you to trusted agencies that can provide further assistance.
3. Safe and inclusive campus environment
Our campuses are committed to being places where every student feels respected and valued. We have strict policies against discrimination and harassment and we aim to foster an inclusive environment for all. Students experiencing violence are encouraged to speak up without fear of judgment, knowing that their experiences will be taken seriously and handled with respect and confidentiality.
4. Educational resources and training
As part of our role in reducing the impact of gendered violence, we incorporate educational initiatives that promote awareness of gender equality, respectful relationships and consent. Our students have access to training that covers topics such as preventing violence, identifying signs of abuse and responding to gendered violence in both their personal lives and future careers.
5. Flexible learning options
For students impacted by violence, it may be challenging to maintain a regular study schedule. TAFE Gippsland offers flexible learning options and personalized academic support to help students manage their education while dealing with difficult personal situations. Whether you need extensions, adjustments to your study load or simply a safe space to talk, we’re here to ensure you can continue your studies with as little additional stress as possible.
How you can get involved
While TAFE Gippsland is committed to supporting students who are victims of gendered violence, we also encourage everyone to play a part in raising awareness and creating a culture of respect and safety.
