Network Account
What is a SAM Account?
SAM stands for Student Accounts Manager. Your SAM account provides access to TAFE Gippsland’s services, which are essential for successfully completing your course.
What services does my SAM account provide me?
A student network accounts offers the following benefits:
- Internet Access: Connect to the internet from student computers in learning hub, computer labs, or your own BYO device while on campus.
- Printing Services: Print documents using student computers in learning hub, computer labs, or your BYO device on campus.
- Office 365 Access: Enjoy access to email with your TAFE Gippsland student address, online Office applications, and 25 GB of cloud storage via OneDrive for your documents.
- Student Wireless Network: Use the campus wireless network with your BYO device for internet access and printing services.
- Library Borrowing: Borrow books, journals, and other learning resources from the TAFE Gippsland library. You can also access digital resources, including e-books and online databases, using your SAM account.
How do I log on to the student network?
Each student lab is equipped with a generic student account (e.g., BAI100, TRA100), which is solely used for creating a student account through the Student Accounts Manager. Generic accounts cannot be used to access the internet or utilise the installed Office 365 software.
To access the internet or printing services on a student computer, you must first log off if you are using a generic account. Then, log back in with your username and the password you set when creating your network account.
Your network account username is identical to your Student ID.
Username format: studentid
Important Notes:
- Printing Access: Access to printing services may take up to 24 hours to sync after initial SAM account registration.
- Student Account Issues: If you encounter any problems with your student account, please report them to your teacher. They will work with ICT Services to resolve the issue.
Geo-blocking
Will I be blocked if I'm using a VPN?
Yes. For cybersecurity reasons, TAFE Gippsland uses Geo-blocking to restrict access to its services from outside Australia.
Key points to note:
- If you use a VPN with an international server IP address, access to TAFE Gippsland services, such as Office 365 or Moodle, will be blocked.
- If you're traveling overseas and connected to a wireless network with an international IP address, you will also be unable to access these services.
Geo-blocking is implemented to block malicious traffic and protect TAFE Gippsland's data.

What are the wireless networks at TAFE Gippsland?
TAFE Gippsland provides two wireless networks for students using their own devices:
- EDUROAM
- EDUROAM is the preferred wireless network for students.
- This network remembers your device and automatically connects when you are on campus.
- No reconfiguration is needed unless you change your SAM password.
- TAFE-GIPPSLAND
- The TAFE-GIPPSLAND network is open and does not require a username or password for initial connection.
- When you attempt to browse the internet, you’ll be redirected to the TAFE Gippsland sign-in page.
- This network requires you to sign in with your credentials each day to access the internet.
- The connection is reset every 24 hours.

Office 365 is a suite of tools provided by TAFE Gippsland to support your learning during your enrolment with us. With your SAM account, you gain access to:
- Email: You receive a TAFE Gippsland student email address, which is essential for communication with your instructors, classmates, and the TAFE administration.
- Online Office Applications: You can access the full suite of Microsoft Office apps online, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. These apps allow you to create, edit, and collaborate on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations directly in your browser, without needing to install anything on your device.
- Cloud Storage via OneDrive: You are provided with 25 GB of cloud storage to store your documents and assignments. OneDrive makes it easy to back up your files, share them with others, and access them from any device, anywhere, at any time.

How should I store my TAFE documents/assignments?
We do not recommend USB devices. USB devices can be temperamental—one accidental drop or device failure, and its game over. With Office 365, you never have to worry about faulty hardware again. Their files are stored safely in the cloud, accessible anytime, anywhere.
We recommend you store your TAFE documents and assignments using OneDrive, which is included with your SAM account. With OneDrive, you get 25 GB of cloud storage, allowing you to:
- Access your files anytime, anywhere from any device with an internet connection.
- Keep your work safe and secure, reducing the risk of losing important documents due to device failure.
- Easily share files with classmates and teachers for collaboration.
- Automatically sync and back up your work to prevent data loss.
To use OneDrive, simply log in to Office 365 with your TAFE Gippsland student email and access your storage through the OneDrive app or online portal.
